DOMESTIC VIOLENCE FORUM

Purpose

The purpose of Chelmsford and Maldon Domestic Violence Forum is to work in partnership to successfully carry out projects around reducing repeat incidents of domestic abuse. The Forum will also address the wellbeing of children living in families where domestic abuse occurs.

Strategic aims

The main aims of the Chelmsford and Maldon DVF are to:

  • Engage with victims and local communities to increase awareness of the issues around domestic violence
  • Increase take up of available services
  • Increase reporting of incidents of domestic violence, especially in the rural areas
  • Reduce repeat incidents of domestic violence
  • To respond to relevant national and local government initiatives
  • To seek and implement best practice from other areas

Frequency of Meetings

The Chelmsford and Maldon DVF will meet quarterly.  Dates will be circulated at the beginning of the year. If members are unable to attend, they should always send a deputy and notify the administrator.

Domestic Violence includes a range of behaviours – abuse can be physical, psychological, sexual or financial and anyone can become a victim. Domestic violence can happen in all kinds of relationships regardless of age, race, sexuality, disability, wealth, gender identity and lifestyle.

FACTS: -

  • Domestic Violence accounts for 14% of all violent incidents.
  • One incident of domestic violence is reported to the police every minute.
  • One in 4 women and one in six men will be a victim od domestic violence in their lifetime with woman at greater risk or repeat victimisation and serious injury.
  • In 2008/09 women were the victims in nearly 8 out of 10 incidents of domestic violence.
  • One incident of domestic violence is reported to the police every minute.

In an emergency, call 999. Domestic violence is treated very seriously by the police, and they will take action to protect you.

If it is not an emergency, you could contact your local police station and discuss your situation with them. You can also contact independent organisations such as Victims’ Support to ask for help and advice.

Police and social workers will use tact and care in order to protect you, and to make sure that you get the help you need. They can put you in touch with volunteer organisations who provide refuge accommodation where you’ll be safe.
