Drugs and Alcohol Reference Group (DARG) - Maldon
The purpose of the Drug and Alcohol Reference Group (DARG) is to work in partnership to prevent and reduce local drug and alcohol problems in the Maldon District. The DARG focuses on prevention, deterrence, treatment and rehabilitation, as well as supporting the Police and other agencies in their enforcement role. The group has links to all other action groups as required and is also linked to the Essex Drug and Alcohol Action Team (EDAAT).
DARG Aims
- to prevent harm to children, young people and families affected by drug and alcohol misuse;
- to support more people in seeking help, accessing treatment programmes and re-integrating socially;
- to protect communities through tackling drug supply, drug-related crime and anti-social behaviour;
- to raise public awareness of alcohol and drug issues in general and to publicise services available locally.
Role
- To work in partnership to provide a local forum for sharing information on substance misuse issues.
- To produce, deliver and monitor action plans in line with the Community Safety Partnership (CSP) annual strategic assessment.
- To provide a situation report on a regular basis to the Responsible Authority Group.
- To assess local need relating to Alcohol and drug misuse and inform EDAAT.
- To develop services and projects to deliver elements of national strategies appropriate to local need.
- To represent Maldon District at County meetings as required.
- To work with other groups, partners and organisations to publicise, develop and coordinate initiatives that improve health and/or reduce crime and disorder related to substance misuse.

The DARG is made up from representatives of a range of local statutory and voluntary sector agencies with involvement in preventing and tackling drug and alcohol misuse. These include: Essex Police, Maldon District Council, Essex Probation Service, NHS Mid Essex, EYPDAS, Open Road etc.
